On March 14, 2026, the Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) Canada organized a sugar shack activity at Maison Bellarmin for individuals accompanied and sponsored by the organization. This gathering brought together approximately 40 participants.
The activity began around 11:00 a.m. with creative games led by one of the volunteers of JRS. This initial moment helped break the ice, spark smiles, and establish a warm and welcoming atmosphere among participants. From the outset, a spirit of conviviality emerged, encouraging openness and active participation.
Participants then gathered in the dining hall to share a traditional sugar shack meal, carefully prepared by the JRS Director and the Sponsorship Program Coordinator, with the support of the project officer and the community outreach worker. This meal, rich in traditional Quebec flavors, became one of the highlights of the day, fostering meaningful exchanges and strengthening connections among participants. As noted by Ms. Jeannine Ngendahimana, this initiative helped “break the isolation of newcomers to Canada” while offering them a moment of sharing around a “delicious meal inspired by the sugar shack tradition,” thoughtfully prepared by Mr. Norbert Piché and his team.

The program continued with a live performance of traditional Quebec music by a violinist and a guitarist for nearly an hour. Their music, both festive and authentic, brought participants together in a joyful atmosphere marked by dancing and applause. Many emphasized how this performance helped warm the environment and reinforce a sense of belonging, as also reflected in Ms. Ngendahimana’s testimony, where she highlights the “beautiful Quebec music” that enriched the experience.
Overall, the day was characterized by a spirit of conviviality, relaxation, and fraternity. It provided participants with a valuable space for connection, renewal, and cultural integration. Feedback collected clearly reflects the positive impact of the activity: according to Déo, “the day was fantastic,” while others expressed deep gratitude for such a meaningful experience.
Through the quality of its organization and the richness of the interactions it fostered, this activity not only created bonds among participants but also strengthened their sense of welcome and inclusion within the community.
